Questions to settle first

Who is allowed to test my eyes at an optical shop? The Optometrists and Opticians Board says that since 1 January 2008 every optometrist and optician serving the public in Singapore must be registered with it and hold a valid registration certificate and practising certificate. Opticians are registered by kind: dispensing only, refraction and dispensing for patients 8 years or older, and contact lens practice. Ask the shop who will test your eyes, and check the name on the Ministry of Health's Professional Registration System.

How much does an eye test cost? W Optics charges S$15 for a standard eye examination for anyone aged 5 and above, and S$120 for an adult's comprehensive examination. Lenskart offers a free eye test at any of its stores, and OWNDAYS' store locator is headed 'Free Eye Test & Exam'. Capitol Optical's optometrists test eyes by appointment, and Zoff's optician tests eyes after you choose glasses; neither prints a fee on the pages read.

Can I buy contact lenses at these shops? Five of the six sell contact lenses; Zoff says it offers only prescription glasses and sunglasses. Lenskart's FAQ says contact lenses need a valid contact lens prescription and an eye health assessment, and that a contact lens prescription is valid for 6 months. W Optics fits contact lenses and offers aftercare.

What do these shops offer for children with myopia? W Optics offers myopia-control spectacles, contact lenses for children, Ortho-K night lenses and atropine drops under an eye doctor's supervision, and six of its 13 stores are myopia centres. OWNDAYS fits Ortho-K lenses from S$1,688 at its premium concept stores. Capitol Optical runs a Myopia Management Programme with Ortho-K and MiSight lenses, Zoff sells MiYOSMART lenses for children, and Paris Miki offers myopia management.
