Questions to settle first

Do music schools have to register with MOE? MOE says a private school must register, with its courses and teachers, if it offers education for 10 or more persons, including tuition and enrichment centres that teach subjects taught in mainstream schools; its page does not say whether instrumental music schools fall under that rule. On this page, Joy Music Studio and Silversnow's Katong branch have rows on MOE's list of private schools, and the five others have none under their names. MOE also says registration does not mean it endorses a school.

How much do music lessons cost? Silversnow charges S$40 for a 30-minute piano lesson, and LVL S$75 to S$160 a lesson for violin, depending on the level and the length. Aureus charges S$279 to S$519 a month for 4 lessons, and Mandeville S$225 to S$588 a month, depending on the teacher's level and the length. Cristofori's beginner piano fees are S$620 or S$820 a term before GST. Yamaha and Joy Music Studio print no lesson fees on the pages read.

Can I take a trial lesson first? Six of the seven offer a trial lesson on the pages read. Joy Music Studio charges S$39.50 for a 30-minute trial, waived if you sign up right after; LVL waives its trial fee when you enrol; Mandeville's trial lessons start from S$75.25 and are paid in advance; Yamaha offers a free trial.

Do these schools teach adults? Five of the seven say they do: Mandeville, Silversnow, LVL, Joy Music Studio and Yamaha, which runs courses for teens and adults apart from its children's courses. The pages read for Aureus and Cristofori do not say whether they teach adults.
