Questions to settle first

How do I check that an insurance broker or adviser is licensed? Look the company up in MAS's Financial Institutions Directory, which shows its licence types. Every firm on this page is listed there: Diot-Siaci Asia, Pacific Prime and Abacare as registered insurance brokers, and the four others as financial advisers. Singapore Expat Advisory is an agency of PromiseLand Financial Advisory, the company the directory lists, and the Expat Advisory Group is part of IPP Financial Advisers.

Does buying through a broker cost more than buying from the insurer? Not at Diot-Siaci Asia, whose FAQ says its service is free of charge and that a policy costs the same through it as directly from the insurer; it is paid brokerage, also known as commission, by the insurer. Singapore Expat Advisory says its fees depend on the work and the products recommended, and are set out in writing in a Statement of Advice before the client commits. The other firms on this page do not say on the pages read how they are paid, so ask before you buy.

Which firms arrange health insurance, and which only life cover? Five firms on this page arrange health insurance for individuals: Diot-Siaci Asia, Singapore Expat Advisory, IPP's Expat Advisory Group, Pacific Prime and Abacare. GFC says it does not advise on health insurance directly but works with specialist partners who can arrange cover, and TallRock Capital's pages list life insurance, not health cover.

How many insurers do these firms work with? Diot-Siaci Asia says it works with 27 insurers and has access to over 2,000 products, and IPP's Expat Advisory Group says it works with over 200 product providers. Pacific Prime's insurers page shows the logos of eight insurers. The four other firms name no insurer on the pages read, so ask which insurers a firm will compare before you start.
