Questions to settle first

What does it cost to hire a domestic helper through an agency? The agency's own fee varies: of the seven on this page, We Are Caring publishes a service fee of S$1,295 plus GST, and JForce puts the agency fee for a transfer helper at typically S$800 to S$1,800. MOM caps what an agency may collect from the helper herself at one month of her fixed monthly salary for each year of service, up to two months' salary. On top come the government's costs: a levy of S$300 a month for the first helper (S$60 at the concessionary rate), a S$5,000 security bond for each helper except Malaysians, and her insurance, none of which the employer may pass on to her.

How do I check an employment agency in Singapore? Look it up on MOM's Employment Agencies Directory, and work only with agencies listed there and with their registered personnel, who must show their registration cards. MOM points to the directory's performance indicators, such as the retention rate, which it defines as the share of helpers placed by the agency who stayed with the same employer for at least one year. Every entry on this page gives its licence number, its demerit points and its figures as the directory showed them on 26 October 2026. MOM also advises choosing an agency whose service agreement includes guarantee, replacement, termination and refund clauses.

What must a first-time employer of a helper do? A first-time employer must attend MOM's Employers' Orientation Programme, a 3-hour course, at least 2 working days before submitting the Work Permit application; a classroom session costs S$35 to S$76 and an online one S$29 to S$36. A helper who has never worked in Singapore must attend the Settling-in Programme within 7 days of her arrival, excluding Sundays and public holidays, and the employer pays for it.

What insurance must I buy for a domestic helper? MOM requires medical insurance covering inpatient care and day surgery with an annual claim limit of at least S$60,000, and personal accident insurance, both bought before the helper arrives. The employer may not pass the cost of either on to the helper.

How many rest days must a domestic helper have? MOM entitles a helper to one rest day a week, on a day the employer and the helper agree. If she agrees to work on it, she must be paid at least one day's salary on top of her basic salary, but she must have at least one rest day a month that cannot be compensated away.
